|About Olds Alberta
Olds is a town in central Alberta, Canada within Mountain View County. It is located 61 km (38 miles) south of Red Deer, the nearest city, and 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Calgary. The nearest towns are Didsbury to the south and Bowden to the north.
The town is located at the intersection of Highways 27 and 2A, 5 km (3.1 miles) west of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Hwy 2). The Canadian Pacific Railway's main Edmonton-Calgary line runs through the town.
In the 2011 Census, the Town of Olds had a population of 8,235, a 13.5% change from its 2006 population of 7,253.
Olds is home to a Cornerstone retail development that opened in 2008. It features a Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire and other major retailers. It also has a thriving downtown core known fondly as Uptowne Olds. Olds is a major agribusiness hub and a base for oilfield services and light industrial manufacturers. There is also a variety of health care facilities that include the Olds Hospital and Care Centre, a health clinic, and a full complement of doctors, dentists and other health care professionals.
Schools and College
The Community Learning Campus is unique to Alberta. It is a joint venture between Olds College and Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) in collaboration with the Town of Olds, Mountain View County, and the University of Alberta. Integrated with the Olds College Campus, the CLC consists of five multi-use facilities complete with integrated programming.
Sport and Recreation
Olds boasts an impressive array of sports, recreational, arts, and leisure facilities, including the Olds Sportsplex (home to the Olds Grizzlys Junior A Hockey franchise), curling rinks, Aquatic Centre (pool and waterslide), Ralph Klein Health & Wellness Centre (indoor track, exercise equipment facility, and three basketball courts).
Art and Leisure
The Trans Canada Theatre, with 375 seats provides an array of drama, film, auctions, and many more cultural activities year round. Fine Arts & Media Centre housing the 375 seat, heritage museum, old fashioned movie theatre, arts clubs, cultural activities, festivals, concerts, rodeo events, and a new public library.
Olds has more than 100 acres of parks, playgrounds, picnic areas and golf courses. Olds also has a wide cross-section of restaurants and accommodations - and Olds College has the perfect facilities and amenities for convention groups, large or small.
